Last Blog Of 2009

This is the last blog for the year 2009 so I thought I would share a few of my musings with all of you.

2009 has been a very challenging year for us here at Casa Del Meig'h. It started with the new year, finding us trying to cope with my being out on workman's compensation due to an injured back. I eventually recovered enough to return to work only to find myself the only tech on duty for several months.

We had made a few plans that were derailed by the need to help family members to get by until they found employment. Oh well, maybe next year.

Anyway, that brings us to today. Here I sit, sick with a nasty head cold. I'm going to cut this off and head out to get something to make me feel just a little better. After that, I'm going to set down and storyboard "End Game", the penultimate saga for Torvald and Victoria Svensen.

Wishing all of my family and friends a joyous New Year,

Kellan, the old warhorse.

December 24th

Everyone wish me luck-the Tigress and I will be going out to find a few more gifts at the last minute. At least I have my personal shopping done!

Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is here and I took a moment to celebrate (an impromptu Blöt) this time of the year when the days would begin to get longer. In proper fashion, I opened a drink and gave thanks for the little things in my life that brought me joy and happiness. I'm thankful for my family, my many friends, my health and a steady job.

The drink, strong like a Nordic Mead:

And a pic of our hills (Mission Peak Wiki ) the day after our recent storm:

Take care,

Of Spammers and Forums

I have a few forums that I administrate and it is kind of hilarious the attempts at spamming the board. Most of it is by 'Bot' that can sign up on PHPBB automatically. One forum I set a delay of one minute before it would accept a registration and that stopped the spammers cold. The other forum, one that refuses to upgrade to a higher revision, I set for administrator approval. Now this is where it gets funny.

Almost all signups are by 'Bot' so the bot chooses an avatar for the 'user'. I took the default avatar and changed it with Paint Shop Pro into the following icon-

You know not a soul would pick that icon! Well ... maybe a few would. Anyway, after I see they're using this avatar, I go to Stop Forum Spam and check their I.P. address against known spammers. If they show there, they're gone. I usualy ban their IP, too. In drastic cases, I report them to their ISP while I'm at it.

I have to do some Christmas shopping later today so I need to get ready.

Take care,

An Interesting Thought

I was looking up the time for the Winter Solstice so I could celebrate the lengthening of the days. It was during my search for the date/time when I thought of my friend Aslaug. Now why would I do that, you ask? Because Aslaug is a heathen, and the Winter Solstice is a time for her to celebrate. Filly, if you are interested, I'll post verbatim anything you might want to email me about what the Winter Solstice means to you.

Anyway, looks like it's Monday, December 21st at 9:47 PM PST for me. I will open up a container of Steel Reserve, give thanks for the many joyous things I have been given to enrich my life, ask the gods to watch over all of us and make known my wishes for the New Year.

Best Wishes from my family to yours,

Sunday (started on Saturday, however)

Some updates:

The rebuilding is going rather slow since I don't want to choke the computer with too much cr@p like it was before.

I have discovered Videolan VLC Player is a very decent DVD player, besides a very good MP3 player. Check it out, I have been using it for some time now for music.

I had a problem with my Thingamablog blogging software this morning, forcing me to recover three recent posts manually. When I say manually, I mean getting the missing posts by downloading the web page and then re-posting them by re-creating them. No big deal, as long as I don't have to do this on a weekly basis! Anyway, things are back to normal.

I'm off this week so maybe I can catch up on my writing. I posted on my forum a reference to the next (and maybe last for a while) adventure for The Immortal Couple. It will not be a normal mission for them, but more of an epic, soul searching journey to the limit of their abilities. There will be some new bad furs for all of you to jeer at and a few of the family members will get a chance to step into the limelight. I will be posting it in early 2010.

That's all for now,

Slainte M'hath!

Wednesday Morning

I'm still rebuilding my system, getting all the programs I need installed. I did have to expunge Online Armor firewall from my system, though. It was blocking things like burning CD's. I installed PC Tools firewall instead and it seems to work quite a bit better.

Off to work,

Monday Evening

Okay, so I have installed XP Pro and a few productivity programs so I can work for the moment. I can say with all honesty some programmers have never used their programs. Teric, this is not aimed at you, just so you know.

I tried to install Thunderbird and Firefox on my laptop only to be thwarted at every turn when I tried to copy over my files/settings. It finally came down to brute force that I was able to do so but not the accepted way.

I installed Thunderbird and then brute-force copied from my old installation the whole program and identity file. Same for the favorites in Firefox. Unorthodox but it worked. I was aided by turning the old drive into an external USB device for copying. Added a whole $13.oo USD to the grand total but what the hey, it worked.

Anyway, the laptop had never ran so crisp. I'm pleased, so far.

Monday's Musings

Okay, I did the deed and my laptop is no longer saddled with Vista, the worst piece of malware to be found on the Internet. It now runs XP Pro SP3 and I am so happy.

Of interest, if you have a laptop and you're installing a new Hdd, it might behoove you to obtain a USB enclosure to simplify transferring your documents. That's what I will be doing later on today, when I go get some Sudafed for my stuffy head.

Take care,

Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!

Okay, what's the last thing you want to see on your computer screen?

"Operating system not found"

Yeah, I was greeted by that bit of information this morning when I attempted to boot my laptop. Several reboots later I was up and running but let me tell you, I'm kinda in a rush now to back up my information and get this over with.

I now have a Western Digital 320 Gb Hdd to replace the original and hopefully, I will have my laptop up and running XP Pro in a few days.

Tomorrow's my birthday so I will be away from the 'net to spend some time with my family.

Take care,

Going Silent

Of note to my family and friends-

As you all may know, I have been using my poor, abused Dell Inspiron 1501 for a few years now. When I purchased it, I was offered to have it shipped with Windows XP Pro on it. That particular option was $100 USD more than having it shipped with Vista Home Basic. Well, being the frugal Scotsman that I am, I passed. What a mistake.

Vista has been a thorn in my side from the get-go. Basic was like dealing with Windows ME. It was terrible. I tried to upgrade to Vista Premium but that didn't give me much more than a fancy interface and the "Flip" thing that proved to be a PITA.

Sitting here by me is a copy of Windows XP Pro and the drivers for my laptop. I will be doing the deed soon so if I fall silent, you know that happened. For those who run a flavor of linux, I cannot install this because several of my programs will not run on Wine and I can't afford VMWare to get by.

Getting ready for the deed,

Kellan, the old warhorse
